Good Practice: Communication Skills for the Medical Practitioner贏得了第一屆David Riley創新商用英文及專業英文大獎

Good Practice

Good Practice

Good Practice’ makes perfect as text to help doctors communicate wins award
THURSDAY 4 December 2008 | Europe

A Press course has made history by becoming the first winner of a new award for innovation in Business English and ESP. The first David Riley Award for Innovation in Business English and ESP (English for Special Purposes) has gone to Good Practice: Communication Skills for the Medical Practitioner by Ros Wright and Marie McCullagh.

Announced at the recent conference of the Business English Special Interest Group (BESIG) in Bonn, the award, which is co-sponsored by Macmillan and BESIG, remembers the late David Riley, a respected teacher, writer and publisher.

Beating 17 entries including Macmillan’s Aviation English and Oxford’s Business Result, the £500 prize went to Good Practice authors.

Good Practice focuses on the language and communication skills doctors need to make consultations more effective, including:
● how non-verbal signals such as body language can impact on communication
●how voice can be used to build rapport and show empathy towards patients, and
● how to maintain mutual respect through cultural awareness.

Tailored to the real communication needs of doctors, this course teaches learners how to sensitively handle a range of situations, such as taking a history and breaking bad news, as well as how to deal with different patient types, from children to the elderly.

Through exposure to authentic clinical scenarios, the course demonstrates the impact of good communication on the doctor-patient relationship, enabling learners to become confident, effective practitioners in English.

Accompanying the course, and providing the focus of our entry, the Good Practice DVD pioneers a practical approach to teaching the non-verbal elements of communication, such as body language.

Unique in the market-place, this invaluable resource enables teachers and students to cover this vital area as part of their communication skills training. Ian McMaster - judge, BESIG co-ordinator and editor-in-chief of Business Spotlight – said: “We were very impressed with the course and particularly with the DVD - the fact that real doctors were used and the dialogue was so natural.”

Congratulations to all involved!
