講題: Activities to Foster Learner Autonomy and Collaboration
What is teaching and what is learning? Why is there so often such a disconnection in language classes between what’s taught and what’s learned? The presenter believes the gap occurs in part because of an over reliance on teacher controlled methodologies and is then amplified by an array of affective factors. What can we do to close this gap and increase the likelihood that what’s being taught is not only learned but also usefully retained? The answer rests in activities based on materials that are flexible enough to be used with students at a wide range of levels and that promote both collaboration and learner autonomy. In this workshop style presentation, participants will be lead in an exploration of the most commonly accepted models of teaching / learning before being introduced to a variety of activities and techniques that foster collaboration and autonomy, narrow the gap between what’s taught and what’s learned, and ensure that each class has real take away value.

講題: The oral skills we forget to teach - balancing exam proficiency and real world needs

When teaching our students to speak in a foreign language, as educators, we understandably concentrate on helping them get the content right. Overt errors such as grammar, lexis, and pronunciation are corrected through direct or indirect feedback. But is this enough? Is it even the most useful correction? The presenter will look beyond these issues at commonly ignored aspects of oral communication.
